The Santa Express service usually runs from the start of autumn. But it has been put on hold until Strathspey Railway determines the outcome of last week’s low speed collision.

The Rail Accident Investigation Branch (RAIB) and the Office of Rail and Road (ORR) are currently investigating.

The incident happened while the Flying Scotsman was connecting with Royal Scotsman passenger carriages.

After the shunting a man and woman were taken to Raigmore Hospital in Inverness and both were later released.

The collision sparked a raft of cancellations of tourist services[2] over the weekend.

Strathspey Railway’s Santa Express is one of its most popular experiences.

A statement from the heritage charity read: “We have to assess and understand the implications of Friday’s incident and consider any advice arising from the RAIB and ORR investigation from which we will move forward.

“As a regulated business, it is the right and proper thing to do.

“Furthermore, staff have been given time out or are busy dealing with refunds and communicating with disappointed customers.”

Police Scotland said officers had finished their enquiries and concluded that no criminality was involved.

On Monday, a Royal Scotsman carriage was loaded onto a lorry.

The Flying Scotsman – owned by the National Railway Museum – is out of action while safety checks are being undertaken.
