M40 reopens near Bicester after collision – recap

The M40 in Oxfordshire has reopened following a crash yesterday (Wednesday, October 18.) Motorists faced long delays as emergency barrier repairs took place on the motorway.

The collision occurred on the M40 Southbound[1] near Junction 10 for Bicester and Cherwell Valley Services at around 12.02pm. It happened in the same area that a lorry broke down and shed its load earlier that day.

The M40 Southbound Junction 10 exit slip road was closed due to recovery work from the broken down lorry, but the road re-opened afterwards. The incident involving the lorry was first reported by Inrix, the traffic and travel[2] data company.

Inrix said: “M40 Southbound exit slip road closed, one lane closed due to recovery work, shed load and broken down lorry at J10 B430 (Brackley / Cherwell Valley Services). Traffic is coping well.

“Lane one (of three) is closed on the main M40 near the exit slip.” Inrix is now reporting two lane closures on the M40 in the same area.

A spokesperson said: “Long delays and two lanes closed due to emergency barrier repairs on M40 Northbound before J10 B430 (Brackley / Cherwell Valley Services). Congestion to J9 A34 (Bicester[4]).

“Lanes two and three (of three) are closed, lane three is also closed Southbound.”

The emergency barrier repairs were completed by 7pm on October 18, a spokesperson for National Highways confirmed. Residual delays of up to 30 minutes continued into the night.
