A stretch of the M56 was fully shut this afternoon after a serious crash between a car and a lorry.
The eastbound carriageway was closed between junction nine for the M6 and Lymm Interchange and junction seven for Bowdon. According to National Highways, emergency services including police, fire and paramedics were called to the scene.
National Highways said just after 12.30pm: “The M56 in Cheshire is closed eastbound between J9 (M6/Lymm Interchange) and J7 (near Altrincham), due to a collision involving a car and lorry. The car struck the central reservation and nearside barrier.
“North West Motorway Police Group, Cheshire Fire & Rescue Services, North West Ambulance Services and National Highways Traffic Officers are on scene.”
The motorway reopened just before 2pm but long delays remain in the area.
