Inquest opens after driver dies on road she’d campaigned to make …

An inquest has been opened and adjourned into the death of a motorist who died on a road she had campaigned to make safer. Isobel Hughes, of Heighley Castle Way, Madeley[1], died on October 1[2] when her car left the A531 and crashed down an embankment into a wood.

The 84-year-old was discovered in her overturned vehicle, just off the A531 near Bowsey Wood.

North Staffordshire assistant coroner Nicholas Walker has today opened the inquest.

He said: “She died on October 1 on the A531. Identification was confirmed and recorded and she was identified by PC Hammonds. Given that there was a road traffic accident there will be in due course a full inquest on a date to be fixed.”

Emergency crews were called to the crash scene at around 7.15am on Sunday October 1. Mrs Hughes was found inside her vehicle, had to be cut free, and died as paramedics battled to save her. It is possible that Mrs Hughes’ white Suzuki Splash had left the carriageway the night before and was only spotted the next morning at first light.
