Driver taken to hospital after another crash on notorious part of A46

A motorist was taken to hospital this morning (October 25) after yet another crash on a ‘dangerous’ section of the A46 where a young man recently lost his life. Emergency services rushed to Haselor Hill in Haselor, near Alcester, after a BMW and a lorry collided at around 7.50am.

“An ambulance and paramedic officer were sent to the scene where, on arrival, crews discovered a lorry and a car had been involved in a collision,” a West Midlands Ambulance Service spokesperson said. “One patient, a man, was conveyed to Warwick[1] Hospital for further treatment.”

Warwickshire Police said the road was closed while the casualty was tended to and the vehicles recovered. It reopened shortly after 9am.

The crash happened close to the Billesley crossroads and between the A435 for Alcester and the A422 for Stratford on a notorious section of the A46 in south Warwickshire sometimes referred to as the ‘Stratford stretch’. A 20-year-old motorist sadly died on that particular part of the road[3] after colliding with a HGV on Friday, October 13.

Five people suffered serious injuries after a head-on collision[4] on that very same section of road 24 hours later. All were taken to University Hospital Coventry[5] and Warwickshire[6] for further assessment and treatment, Warwickshire Police[7] said.

The crashes earlier this month prompted a fresh wave of calls for road safety measures on the Stratford stretch of the A46[8]. “That road needs some serious intervention,” one person said in response to a Warwickshire[9] Police post on Facebook.

“It’s an absolute nightmare to get out of this (Billesley) junction – you take your life in your hands,” a second observer wrote. “Something needs to be done asap.”

“So many accidents on one bit of road that’s no more than six miles long between the two islands,” another said. “Maybe reduce the speed (and) add average speed cameras between the two islands.”
