A driver who ‘suffered a medical incident at the wheel’ near Merry Hill shopping centre has died. Medics said “nothing could be done” to save the man, who was confirmed dead at the scene in Brierley Hill.
Emergency services were called to reports of a one-car collision at The Boulevard, just after 1pm on Thursday, October 19. An off-duty community first responder was already tending to the man when paramedics arrived.
Ambulance crews began advanced life support but “despite their best efforts”, he could not be saved. A West Midlands Ambulance Service[1] spokesperson said: “Upon arrival, we found a man who was the driver of the car, who is believed to have suffered a medical incident at the wheel, being cared for by an off-duty community first responder.”
The spokesperson continued: “Ambulance staff immediately administered advanced life support to him. Unfortunately, despite their best efforts, nothing more could be done to save him and he was confirmed deceased at the scene.”
The Boulevard remains partially blocked due to the tragedy, which happened near KFC[3]. National Express has diverted bus services 2, 6, 8, 15 and X10 via The Embankment and Level Street to join the normal line of route.
