Details as around half of NI Railway fares to rise again

Around half of NI Railways fares are rising again as the Department for Infrastructure and Translink[1] look for “new revenue raising measures”.

DfI say any increases in adult single tickets will be capped at £1.50 but that iLink fares will not go up across the network.

It is the second time this year DfI[2] and Translink[3] have announced rising public transport costs, with an average hike of 7% across trains, buses and Gliders in March.

They said the latest move will simplify rail pricing structures and more accurately reflect the mileage travelled, leading to fairer pricing for passengers.

The change comes into force on Monday, November 6, with Translink saying about half of adult fares will be unaffected.

But routes that have historically received higher levels of subsidy to be kept lower will now follow the standardised pricing structure.

Translink director of commercial operations, David Cowan[6], said: “We have carefully carried out this review and worked hard to keep any increases to a minimum.

“Typical increases will be around 50p on a standard adult single fare. We understand for some, this will be unwelcome news.

“Previously our funding levels allowed us to support these inconsistent fares across the network, however with reduced funding levels we have had to make these adjustments, given the pressures on Translink finances.
