Deadly Storm Babet has claimed two more victims as a car plunges off a bridge in North Yorkshire.

The tragic incident happened Saturday afternoon at 1:20pm near Skipton. A man and a woman, both in their 70s, were in the red Vauxhall Grandland which collided with a bridge barrier on the A629 Western Bypass and fell at least 10 metres.

The man was pronounced dead at the scene and the woman was airlifted to hospital but died shortly after arriving – their next of kin have been informed.

This comes as six others have sadly lost their lives [2]as parts of the UK are hit by unprecedented rain[3] and a second red ‘danger to life’ warning remains in effect in eastern Scotland.

Pictures show the wreckage of the vehicle, which landed on its roof near to a canal.

North Yorkshire Police tonight appealed for information including dashcam footage.

Any witnesses to the collision are asked to contact North Yorkshire Police on 101 quoting reference number 12230200190.

Officers have not stated whether the car left the bridge as a result of stormy winds and heavy rain which today battered North Yorkshire.

This comes as four cars and an HGV were involved in a deadly crash at around 9.10am on Friday killing two women. The incident occurred eastbound between junction 17 at Chippenham and junction 18 at Bath.

Wiltshire Police said the investigation into the crash is still ongoing – but MailOnline understands detectives believe the weather played a ‘significant part’ in the crash. Flooding had been reported elsewhere on the motorway early on Friday.

Storm Babet shows no signs of abating as some parts of the UK see two months of rain n the space of three days.

The storm has claimed the lives of six people since Thursday including two in Angus, Scotland[4]: a 57-year-old woman who died after being swept into a river and a 56-year-old man in the region who was killed by a falling tree that struck his van.

A man in his 60s died after getting caught in fast-flowing flood water in Cleobury Mortimer, Shropshire on Friday; police found his body two hours after he disappeared under the water.

Elsewhere, a crash in Calderdale[5] near Halifax, West Yorkshire on Friday night left the 19-year-old driver of a white Seat Ibiza dead and their 18-year-old passenger fighting for their life. The weather conditions were ‘a factor’ in the crash, reports The Sun[6].

Homes in Brechin, Angus, have been evacuated as the banks of the River South Esk burst after surging 5m higher than normal; in nearby Fowlis, outside Dundee, the coastguard were called to help after a bridge collapsed, taking a car with it.

Earlier today, police closed King’s Cross Station due to overcrowding.

Stranded passengers shared videos on X, formerly known as Twitter, of gargantuan crowds forming inside the station, amidst claims that people were being ‘crushed’ on the concourse of the huge terminal. [7]

Network Rail[8] said crowd control measures were put in place at King’s Cross as a result of disruption to LNER services, before the station was closed.

One man said he managed to hop onto a train but there was ‘no communication,’ and said ‘the trains are like sardines.’
