J. Murphy & Sons Ltd has been awarded the construction contract for Cambridge South station.

The build will support 300 new construction jobs.

Valued at 93.4m GBP, the contract covers the construction of a new two storey, four platform station, including ticket vending machines, lifts providing step free access to all platforms, accessible toilets, baby change facilities, a waiting area, space for retail and catering and capacity for 1000 cycle parking spaces.

The UK Rail Minister confirmed the Government’s commitment to funding this construction[1] in June.

Situated opposite the Cambridge Biomedical Campus, the station is expected to be completed in 2025, when it will begin to provide passengers with easier access to Europe’s largest centre of medical research and health science.

The station also forms part of the proposed East-West Rail[2] route between Oxford and Cambridge, via Bicester and Milton-Keynes.

J. Murphy & Sons, alongside delivery partners Alstom and South Rail Systems Alliance (SRSA), will also make changes to existing rail and road infrastructure to support the new station.

This will include modifying roads and crossings to enable station access, the southern approach to Cambridge station and existing signalling equipment, installing two additional track loops, enhancements to Shepreth branch junction, deploying overhead line electrification infrastructure and building a new substation.

Enabling works are already underway with the establishment of the worksite compound, installation of overhead line masts and the front walls of the platforms.

Joe Kennedy, Project Director for J Murphy & Sons, said:

“We’re very excited to be continuing our work on Cambridge South Station.

“Murphy has made significant progress over recent months completing the enabling works, commenced installation of all four platforms, station building piling and undertaken all groundworks to facilitate the track being realigned during a blockade in December 2023.

“We have forged a strong working relationship with Network Rail and our other delivery partners, SRSA and Alstom on this major infrastructure project and look forward to completing this station for the people of Cambridge.”
