Car bursts into flames on M32 and causes major traffic problems

A car burst into flames and was totally destroyed by fire[1] on the M32 this morning. A thick black cloud of smoke billowed into the sky and could be seen for miles around as drivers got caught up in tailbacks.

Footage taken by a passenger in a car travelling in the opposite direction along the M32[2] shows flames completely engulfing a silver-coloured car. BristolLive understands that nobody was injured in the fire.

The blaze forced the southbound exit slip road for the A4174 to be closed by 8.30am, causing significant delays for commuters. The incident was cleared by around 9am but residual delays remained for some time.

A spokesperson for Avon Fire and Rescue[5] Service said the vehicle fire on the M32 is not believed to have been started deliberately. In a statement, they said: “Crews from Temple were called to reports of a vehicle on fire at 07.58am.

“With two firefighters wearing breathing apparatus, crews used one high pressure hose reel to extinguish the fire. Crews also used hydraulic spreaders for access to the fire, and thermal imaging cameras to check for hotspots.

“Crews remained at the scene for some time providing traffic control and later washed the roadway down with cleaner and a high pressure hose reel. The cause of the incident is thought to have been accidental ignition.”
