Cancelled Go North East bus services in the Tyne Valley

Workers at Go North East are due to begin a continuous walkout on Saturday, October 28, which will result in all of the operator’s services being cancelled until further notice.

Passengers have already endured major disruption during two week-long strikes this month, but the bitter industrial dispute will now ramp up after Unite union members overwhelmingly rejected a new pay offer from the company.

The union announced on Friday lunchtime that 81 per cent of members who voted in a ballot, which had a 93 per cent turnout, chose to say no to the offer of a 10.3 per cent pay rise.

That pay deal would have seen drivers’ pay uplifted to £14.15 per hour – but the union has called on the company to match the superior average salary given to Go North West drivers, of £15.53.

Unite accused Go North East bosses of having “dragged their feet and refused to make a decent pay offer”, while the operator said it was “baffled” by the rejection and claimed it had met “each and every one” of the union’s demands.

The latest round of industrial action will result in all Go North East services, aside from contracted school buses, being cancelled for an indefinite period.

Under the law, workers taking industrial action have legal protection for 12 weeks – after which they can be dismissed. As Unite members at Go North East began their first strike week on September 30, that 12-week period would end on December 22.

There are now widespread concerns about communities across the region being deprived of critical bus services, particularly those that have no other public transport aside from Go North East routes.
