Alton Towers caf? to be transformed as part of Nemesis revamp

A café area at Alton Towers[1] is set to be transformed as part of the revamp of the legendary Nemesis. The attraction, which has been ridden by more than 50 million thrill-seekers since it opened in 1994, is undergoing an extensive transformation and is due to reopen at the resort next year.

The former Ripsaw Café, also located in the theme park’s Forbidden Valley area, is also earmarked for changes. Resort operator Merlin Entertainments is seeking planning permission from Staffordshire Moorlands District Council for an extension and internal alterations.

A design and access statement submitted as part of the application said: “The proposal is for the installation of a permanent retail unit associated with a re-themed attraction in the revitalized area of Forbidden Valley at Alton Towers. The objective has been to provide a new retail building that, along with new theming to the external façades, will refresh the imminent area in line with the retheming of the Nemesis attraction.

“The site currently consists (of a) series of four portable cabins that are fixed together with associated external theming. The proposal is for the removal of the unused area of the existing mixed-use building.

“Two cabins will be removed whilst the remaining will continue to operate throughout the building process. The retail building will consist of an extension such that the final building measures 16.7m in length (and) 10.2m in width with a ridge height of 4.1m and an eaves height of 3.5m.

“The proposed layout will result in a building footprint increase of 60m2. With an overall site area of 308 m2, this is considered an efficient use of space.”
