A12 shut due to overrunning night roadworks causing major delays
Major traffic delays are expected on the A12 this morning (October 28) as one carriageway remains closed due to overrunning roadworks. There are considerable delays on the northbound carriageway today as it remains closed between Marks Tey and Stanway.
Work has been taking place to resurface and upgrade the stretch of road between junctions 25 and 26 of the road on the northbound side, which was due to be completed at 6am this morning (October 28).
However, the work is overrunning and crews are still on the road as of 9am today. The closure is between junction 25 with the A120 at Marks Tey and junction 26 with Essex Yeomanry Way at the Tollgate Interchange.
There is considerable traffic queuing back to junction 24 with Kelvedon north as vehicles are diverted. There is also queuing on the A120 on the approach and the road through Marks Tey and Stanway.
A spokesman for National Highways said: “The #A12[3] northbound remains closed this morning between J25 (Marks Tey) and J26 (near Colchester) following overrunning roadworks. A signed diversion remains in place.” Highways said that no reported issues with traffic have been shared, but traffic monitoring site Inrix said there are delays on approach to the closures.
The issue comes at the same time as further closures to roads around the A12 at Boreham[4] as final preparations are made for the new Generals Lane Bridge to open on Monday (October 30). There is a full closure of the Generals Lane Roundabout at the Boreham Interchange and the A138 from the Toby Carvery Roundabout leading to the Boreham Interchange.
This started at 8pm on Friday (October 27) and will finish at 5am on Monday (October 30). Diversions are in place. There will also be changes to some bus services during the closures. The routes affected by the closures are the 71, X71 and 371 operated by First. During the closure, the following journeys will be affected:
- Through services in a northbound direction will not be able to operate between Chelmsford, Springfield and Boreham.
- Through services in a southbound direction will not operate between Boreham and Springfield.
Free shuttle services will operate during the closure period:
- Service 2 (Boreham Shuttle): Boreham, St Andrew’s Church – Boreham Elm Way – Hatfield Peverel, The Swan Inn
- Service 1 (71 to Springfield): To and from Chelmsford Bus Station – Chelmer Village Shopping Centre – Springfield (opposite Sainsbury’s)
