Hundreds braved the cold weather to don their finest goth-chic outfits to celebrate all things weird and wonderful
Hundreds have descended on a North Yorkshire town to celebrate the weird and wonderful.
Making their way down the cobbled streets of Whitby[1], goth enthusiasts donned their finest and spookiest outfits for one of the biggest alternative events of the year. Whitby Goth Weekend[2], an alternative music festival, has returned for the second time in 2023, bringing with it some of the quirkiest looking characters.
The event, which started on Friday and is set to finish on Sunday, celebrates gothic music, fashion and culture and is always a firm favourite, with people flocking to the North Yorkshire town[3] for the weekend packed full of fun. The Bizarre Bazaar market is also in town and is spread across three venues; The Spa Pavilion, Whitby Leisure Centre and Whitby Brunswick Centre.
The festival was first launched in 1994 and has been held bi-annually since 1997. The October dates are always packed full of gothic goodness, with many using the event to get themselves well and truly into the Halloween spirit.
It’s an incredible busy week for businesses across Whitby as shops and restaurants take advantage of the larger-than-life presence in the town. This year one pub has even requested special permission to temporarily extend its beer garden hours so event-goers can make the most of their weekend.
Hundreds of people paraded around Whitby[4] in their finest gothic outfits, from Victorian inspired Steam Punk outfits to more futuristic Cyber Goths and everything in between, defying the less than warm weather. Whitby acts as a perfect backdrop for spooky photo opportunities in the old Abbey – especially in the gloomy autumn weather, with many snapping pictures in the sprawling cemetery at the top of the famous 199 steps.
