Woman’s devastating words to rescuers after horror crash crushed …

A woman who survived a horrific car crash[1] which left her vehicle crushed like a soda can spoke just five devastating words to firefighters cutting her free.

Kelsey Grennan, 25, was trapped in her small Honda Civic after it crumpled around her in the driving seat following a collision with a truck on a wet and winding road in Quogue, New York. Kelsey said extreme impact of the crash was a "total blur" describing how she came around to find the dashboard of the car penetrating into her leg.

As rescuers raced to the scene, Kelsey remained trapped in the mangled wreckage for almost an hour, terrified at the sounds of sawing through metal edging closer and closer. Kelsey had broken multiple bones throughout her body and sat in agony before eventually being freed with the jaws of life, a hydraulic rescue tool.

After being placed on a stretcher, Kelsey said she realised she had no feeling in her legs, with panic soon setting in that she had lost them in the crush. Kelsey summoned the energy to ask medical teams: "Are my legs still there" before feeling further dread when her question was met with terrifying silence.

Kelsey, a house manager/nanny and online content creator, said the terror coursed through her veins as she passed in and out of consciousness. Kelsey was originally taken to Peconic Medical Center before being transferred to Stoney Brook for specialist care to treat her fractured knee cap, open bone fractures in her ankles, a broken tibula and fibula and broken ribs. Already having undergone two surgeries, Kelsey is now facing further treatment in a rehabilitation[2] centre.

As part of her journey to recovery, friends and family are raising money with a GoFundMe page[4] to help with the rising medical costs of surgeries and further rehabilitation treatments. Currently, Kelsey's mobility is almost entirely confined to her hospital bed at the moment, and hopes treatment can soon help her walk again.

Describing the moment her life changed, the Long Islander told The Mirror US[5]: "The crash happened at 11am and I was going to the Hamptons as a nanny and the road was wet from rain and super windy. I was driving normally and the last thing I remember before the crash was a pick-up truck coming head on.

"The next thing I knew I was trapped in my car and the dashboard was impaled on my leg and I was trapped for at least 45 minutes as they were trying to get me out. They used jaws of life and they ended up lifting the dashboard off me and peeling the roof off.

"There was so much banging and the noises were so scary. They had to cover me with sheets to limit the shattered glass falling onto me. Waiting for them to get me out just felt like hours." Kelsey recalled trying to somehow move her body herself after the initial impact, before realising she was completely trapped in the wreck.

Kelsey added: "I regret trying to get out and free myself now, but I was panicking and trying to push free. Amazingly, my phone had called 911 on the impact. I only realised when the team rescuing me said I had called police at 11.04, but I hadn't. I guess my phone knew I had gotten in the crash.

"After being cut free, they cut me from my favourite pink jeans and put me on a stretcher. I couldn't feel my legs and I said, 'are my legs still there? What's wrong with my legs? Do I have legs?' There was a silence for a moment and nobody said anything and that was really scary. I felt so isolated."

Kelsey says she manages to find pleasures in the small things, such as this view of a sunset from her hospital bed

Despite the agonising pain from her injuries and her long journey to recovery, Kelsey says she has managed to find moments of hope in the darkness, with some of her best friends gathering at her bed side to brush and treat her hair and even bringing her pampering goods for a self-care day.

Family even brought Kelsey's beloved cat Brinley for a visit, with the survivor adding that seeing her furry sidekick was a highlight because she "just loves her so much."

Kelsey added: "Selfcare has helped - just simple things like moisturising, doing my hair and painting my nails. My family and friends are visiting and they are amazing. My followers have also been so supportive and sending me encouraging messages.
