A woman who died in a road traffic accident in Inishowen has been named locally as Mary Whitters-Borland.

A mother-of-two, Mrs Whitters-Borland died when the car she was driving was involved in a collision with a lorry. The victim, who was from Moville, was well-known throughout the east Inishowen area.

A Garda spokesman said the accident happened at Moville, on the main Derry to Moville road, at approximately 8am on Friday.

“The driver of the car, a female in her late fifties, was pronounced deceased at the scene a short time later. The lorry driver, a male in his fifties, was removed to hospital for assessment only,” the spokesman said.

The main Derry to Moville road remained closed from Redcastle throughout most of Friday to facilitate the Garda Forensic Collision Investigation team. Gardaí appealed to anyone who was travelling on the road at the time and who may have camera footage to come forward.

Moville Labour Party councillor Martin Farren said news of Mrs Whitters-Borland’s death had shocked the community in east Inishowen.

“My thoughts are with the family of the victim. I can’t imagine what they must be going through. I know the people of Moville will rally around the family in the coming days and will support them at this awful time,” Mr Farren said.

Inishowen Sinn Féin councillor Terry Crossan also extended his sympathies to the family of the deceased. Mr Crossan said news of yet another road traffic fatality sent shock across the community.

Mrs Whitters-Borland’s death is the second road fatality in the Republic within 24 hours. A woman in her fifties died following a two-vehicle collision in Co Leitrim on Thursday evening. The accident occurred at Lisnabrack, Carrick-on-Shannon shortly before 6pm on Thursday. The woman, who was a passenger in one of the cars, died at the scene.

The drivers of both cars involved in the Co Leitrim accident were taken to Sligo University Hospital for assessment and treatment of non-life threatening injuries.
