West County ‘hidden gem’ is a place where time stands still

Villagers living in a hidden West Country[1] gem want to keep their beautiful community a secret. But word is out now that South Pool in Devon[2] has been named the most beautiful in the UK

The time-warp village is a jewel in the crown of the South West. Set in a charming rural setting, and filled with historic architecture, it also conveniently located to the beautiful Devonshire coast.

And now it can claim the title of the “most beautiful village” in the UK, bestowed upon it by CN Traveller. It described the charming location as being known for its “sailing brigade, smart shops and ice-cream parlours”, reports Devon Live.[3]

It is also surrounded by stunning beaches, with one traveller describing nearby Bantham Beach as the “most beautiful beach without leaving the UK”. But some locals were keen to keep South Pool hidden, playing down rave reviews online with one saying: “Shhh, don’t tell anyone! We locals want to keep it a secret!”

Described as quintessentially English, it’s a place where time seems to stand still. The narrow, winding streets are lined with centuries-old stone cottages which create a postcard-perfect scene. South Pool’s timeless beauty has made it a popular destination for tourists and a beloved home for its residents.

One of the village’s most iconic features is the Church of St Cyriac and St Julietta, a Grade I listed building dating back to the 13th century. The church boasts stunning medieval architecture, including a beautiful Norman font and an intricately carved rood screen.

The heart of South Pool is its traditional village pub, The Millbrook Inn. The pub’s cosy interior, complete with open fires and wooden beams, creates a welcoming atmosphere where locals and visitors alike can gather for a meal or a drink.

South Pool is situated in a stunning natural landscape. The village is surrounded by lush green fields and rolling hills, making it a paradise for hikers and nature enthusiasts. The nearby Salcombe Estuary offers a wealth of outdoor activities, including sailing, kayaking, and fishing. The estuary’s tranquil waters and breathtaking views also make it a popular spot for relaxation and exploration.
