Village’s historic telephone exchange set to become student flats

A village’s historic former telephone exchange could be transformed into student housing once it is sold at auction later this month.

The exchange in Newton St Loe, near Bath[1], has fallen into a state of disrepair in many years and attempts have been made to revive it.

The Pennyquick property, which sits on a 0.14 acre plot next to the village’s Globe Inn pub, has planning permission to be converted into three self-contained studio flats for use as accommodation for students at Bath Spa University.

It is to be sold off by City & Rural Property Auctions, which is based in Keynsham[2], on Wednesday, September 27. A guide price of between £150,000 and £200,000 has been set for when it goes under the hammer.

The listing on the City & Rural Property Auctions website said: “The property is situated in a convenient position, close to Bath Spa University’s Newton Park campus as well as offering easy access to central Bath.

“The proposed development details a loft conversion with front and rear dormers. The accommodation includes two flats on the ground floor with one in the roof. There is parking provision for one disabled parking space.

“Conversion of the disused telephone exchange to form three units of student accommodation was granted in 2011. This permission is subject to an agreement restricting use to students and staff of Bath Spa University.”

More information about the property as well as details of how to request a viewing can be found on the City & Rural Property Auctions website[4].
