Travel alert as over 75k set to attend Radio 2 in the Park

More than 75,000 people are expected to flock to Victoria Park for the Radio 2 in the Park festival[1] this weekend. It means trains to Leicester are expected to be "very busy" on Saturday, September 17 and Sunday, 17.

East Midlands Railway (EMR) is urging festivalgoers to plan in advance and "think carefully" about their journeys back home each day. The rail operator is advising people to factor in the 15-minute walk from the park to train station if they are planning to take the last train home.

The huge event will be Radio 2's first flagship event since Radio 2 Live in Hyde Park in 2019. LeicestershireLive[2] will be covering the two-day event which includes headlining performances from Tears for Fears and Kylie Minogue.

Kylie is one of the event headliners

Meanwhile, trains to Leicester will have extra carriages to accommodate the increased number of customers expected over the weekend.

Mike O'Callaghan-Staples, Head of Stations at EMR, said: "We are expecting our services to be very busy as people flock to the city to take part in this fantastic event[4]. We are playing our part by operating as many extra carriages as we can, but we need a little help from festival-goers to make sure their journey home is a relaxed one.

"We are urging customers to book their tickets in advance where possible, allow plenty of time to get home and understand how the 15-minute walk from the park to the station affects the time they should leave the festival. We expect those last trains of the day following the concert to be especially busy and want customers to plan ahead."

For those travelling to Leicester by car, there will be no parking available to ticketholders around the park. Instead, official event parking[5] has been made available to book, located a short walk from the site.

Resale tickets for the BBC Radio 2 in the Park festival are being sold through Ticketmaster for the Saturday here and the Sunday here.[6][7]
