Trains stopped as emergency services ‘deal with incident’ on line

All trains have been suspended as emergency services “deal with an incident” on the line.

National Rail posted an update on X, the social media platform formerly known as Twitter, at around 10pm on Thursday, September 21, letting passengers know there would be no trains running between Southport[1] and Wigan[2] Wallgate. It comes as emergency services are “dealing with an incident” on the line.

To ensure emergency services can work safely all trains between the stations have been suspended until the end of the day.

The update from National Rail read: “The emergency services dealing with an incident between Southport and Wigan Wallgate means all lines are blocked. As a result, trains will be cancelled.

“Disruption is expected until the end of the day.”

A rail replacement bus service is now in place for customers, who have been told to expect journey times to increase by 60 minutes.

National Rail said: “To assist customers to complete their journey, road replacement transport will be provided as follows. A coach operated by Bestway will depart Southport at 11.10pm calling at stations to Wigan Wallgate.

“3 x 16 Seater Mini Buses operated by Premier & Mayfair will depart Southport at 11.20pm, calling at stations to Manchester Oxford Road. A coach operated by Phantom Travel will depart Wigan Wallgate at 11.00pm, calling at stations to Southport.

“A coach operated by Phantom Travel will depart Wigan Wallgate at 11.21pm, calling at stations to Southport. Please note, journey times will be extended by up to 60 minutes when using road replacement transport.”
