Swadlincote restaurant named one of UK’s top three ‘hidden gems’

A South Derbyshire eatery is officially in the top three ‘hidden gem’ restaurants in the UK. Ice & Slice at The Kiln, in Swadlincote[1], is the town’s top-ranked restaurant.

It has an average rating of five stars from 801 reviews. And now it has taken bronze in the ‘off-the-beaten-tracks-find’ category in TripAdvisor’s 2023 Travellers’ Choice Best of the Best awards.

The town centre eatery on the corner of Grove Street serves a variety of dishes including ribs, pork belly, mushroom carbonara, sandwiches, salads and its speciality wood-fired pizzas. TripAdvisor gives the price range for the establishment[2] as £20-£35.

It also acts as a bar with a huge selection of cocktails on offer and runs events such as champagne breakfasts monthly. Draft beer, cider, spirits and soft drinks are also available.

The most recent review for Ice & Slice on TripAdvisor says: “Went for a meal with a friend. The food was fresh and delicious. A lot of cocktail choices which didn’t disappoint. Our waitress Mia was amazing. Very caring and hard working. Will visit again.”

Another says: “Had rhubarb and custard cocktail then the sharing meat platter which was epic. Great place, looked after by Milan who made sure we had all we wanted. Highly recommend a visit to this unique restaurant.”

Ice & Slice was pipped to the “Hidden Gem” number-one spot by Osteria in Shrewsbury and Ganesha Authentic Indian Cuisine in Bristol. The world’s top five consisted of venues in Poland, Portugal, Dubai, Peru and Turkey.

Opening in autumn 2020, the business has proved a phenomenal introduction to Swadlincote in the three years it has been operating. The building which houses it previously played host to the Midland Co-Op store.

In the past, it has also been an auto shop and is built on the site of a circular bottle kiln, on land which used to be part of Sharpe’s Pottery. The kiln was demolished in 1907.
