‘Storm Agnes’ could batter city amid ‘danger to life’ warning
The Met Office has issued a "danger to life" warning for Liverpool as stormy weather is on its way.
The city is set to be battered by strong winds later this week with gusts of up to 41mph. Wirral,[1] Sefton a[2]nd St Helens[3] are also covered by the yellow weather warning[4] for wind which comes into force at 10am on Wednesday until 7am on Thursday.
If the storm develops it could be officially named as Storm Agnes, according to reports. This depends on the track and intensity of the weather, and meteorologists will analyse this in the coming days to make a decision.
The Weather Outlook forecaster Brian Gaze told the Mirror Online[6]: "There is a real possibility Storm Agnes could arrive. Strong winds and heavy rain could lead to disruption. The best advice is to stay up to date with forecasts."
Roads and bridges are likely to be closed due to the windy weather which could cause delays and cancellations to trains, flights and ferries. The yellow weather warning said:
- There is a small chance of injuries and danger to life from flying debris
- There is a slight chance of some damage to buildings, such as tiles blown from roofs
- There is a slight chance that power cuts may occur, with the potential to affect other services, such as mobile phone coverage
- Longer journey times are likely, or cancellations as road, rail, air and ferry services are affected. Some roads and bridges are likely to close.
- There is a small chance that injuries and danger to life could occur from large waves and beach material being thrown onto sea fronts, coastal roads and properties; with a chance of some minor flooding of coastal roads.
The Met Office forecast for the North West on Tuesday said: "Mist and fog clearing quickly leaving a changeable day with more widespread showers, sometimes heavy with a risk of thunder. Breezy, particularly at the coasts, but easing later. Maximum temperature 19 °C."
The forecast for Wednesday to Friday said: "Persistent heavy rain developing on Wednesday, with severe gales possible. Further rain or showers from the west on Thursday and Friday and remaining breezy. Temperatures closer to average."
