Residents calling for ‘lazy’ people to stop littering in Lincoln’s fly …
Residents in Lincoln[1] are calling for “lazy” people to stop dumping litter in the area deemed as being the worst for flytipping in the city. A heap of rubbish bags were spotted that had been dumped at the side of a bus stop in Park Ward and a discarded shopping trolley was seen in South Common.
Data from the City of Lincoln Council[2] reveals that Park Ward in Lincoln, which includes the lower part of Lincoln High Street, South Common and Sincil Bank, received the highest fly-tipping complaints in Lincoln in 2021/2022. It received a total of 194 which was also a big rise from the 43 complaints logged in 2020/2021.
Will Walker, 23, said the area is “quite bad” for discarded rubbish, pointing towards a bin bag full of general waste left on the side of the river. He said he has even seen dirty nappies left on the side of the road.

He said: “I would say we need more bins, but that requires more work on the people’s part to not be lazy. There are bins all over and yet there’s still rubbish around here.
“Unfortunately, I think it’s a matter of more people cleaning it up.” Clayton Mitchell, 25, a Bracebridge Heath resident who is often in the Park Ward area, said: “There is often broken glass, pizza boxes and McDonald’s[4] wrappers.
“There definitely needs to be more in place to stop it. When you’re walking around town, you want to see something nice, you don’t want to see litter like this.”

Andrew Swan, 61, had a different view, and said: “It’s not too bad around here, although you always get something.” The lowest reported incidents of flytipping in Lincoln in 2022 was Witham Ward, with only 14 complaints.
Park Ward representative and former Mayor, Councillor Chris Burke (Labour) said limited hours at the tip and lack of street lighting at night contribute to fly-tipping. He said: “As a council, we have increased the number of CCTV cameras and we do prosecute wherever possible.
“Our objective is to create a better environment, and this has led to major investment in the ward, campaigned for by our team of Labour councillors. Our residents’ parking, one-way systems and Hermit Street development will all contribute to a better, less polluted place for residents to live in.
“Finally, I pay tribute to our community-led litter pickers who work hard alongside the council in our battle against the dumpers. I would ask people to report any dumping that they see to the city council.”
