Police close motorway for hours following concerns for woman

Police closed off a Greater Manchester motorway for more than four hours following concerns for a person's welfare. Officers were sent out to the M66 near Bury[1] following a call at 7.55pm yesterday (September 4).

Traffic was initially stopped in both directions between junctions one and two, before the motorway was later closed with diversions in place. Greater Manchester Police[2] says it was called out following concerns for a woman's welfare.

Specialist negotiators helped bring the woman to safety in the early hours of this morning. Ambulances were also dispatched to the scene.
