Plans to expand Llansamlet Travellers site in Swansea

Another Travellers site in Swansea is set to expand. Swansea Council has asked for planning permission to change use of land to extend the existing site at land off Millstream Way, Llansamlet, to accommodate 24 additional pitches.

Plans state that, following the completion of the Welsh Government's Gypsy and Traveller Accommodation Assessment, there is now "a legal requirement to construct new pitches" at the site. It follows plans to extend another site, the existing Travellers site off Pant Y Blawd Road in Llansamlet, to accommodate 14 additional pitches. You can

Planning applications lodged to support the Millstream Way plans read: "The development is underpinned by a guiding vision, to create a Gypsy Traveller Site, which establishes a strong sense of place with its own local distinctiveness, comprising efficient dwelling types that integrate with neighbouring buildings and contribute and enhance the established character and appearance of the local area." It adds: "The development will meet the requirement of addition of pitches to the existing permitted Gypsy Traveller site, while also meeting the identified amenity demand from existing residents. The proposal is underpinned by a vision to create a residential development of functional design to reflect their intended use and to reflect Welsh Governments Gypsy and Traveller Sites design guidance, while meeting the demands of the occupants and providing a well-connected layout and maximises efficient use of the land. The scheme creates two small communities and the layout provides a meaningful sense of enclosure with clear routes in and out of the site, which encourages an attractive street-scene.

"Each dwelling is designed to respond to contemporary living arrangements. The dwellings will benefit from positive outlooks onto streets and gardens, which are generous in size, openness and levels of privacy. The layout of the development has been designed with appropriate private and semi-private open spaces and ensures that the required separation distances are achieved between each dwelling, meaning that no direct overlooking impacts are caused to the current and future occupants. The layout of the homes has been designed to provide wide frontages, allowing good levels of daylighting to all spaces." Swansea[5] Council's planning department will consider the application.
