Person on M5 needing medical treatment sparks big 999 call-out

The M5 was closed this evening (September 21) following an incident involving a person needing medical help. Emergency services dashed to the Somerset-Devon border after receiving reports of an incident on the southbound carriageway between junction 26 (Wellington) and 27 (Tiverton).

National Highways said the incident was Avon and Somerset Police-led, with the air ambulance also being called out. While the southbound side was closed, all traffic was held on the opposite carriageway to allow the air ambulance to land.

Motorists were diverted off the motorway while the incident was dealt with. A police spokesperson confirmed a person required medical treatment.

A police spokesperson said at around 9.30pm: “The M5 is currently shut southbound between junctions 26 and 27 to allow emergency services provide medical treatment to one person. Traffic heading northbound is also being held, to allow the air ambulance to land.”

A diversion route was set up by National Highways, who said: “The M5 in Somerset is closed between J26 (Taunton) and J27 (Tiverton) due to a Avon and Somerset Police incident. Emergency services including Air Ambulance attended the scene. National Highways Traffic Officers are also on scene assisting with traffic management.”
