Person in Bristol hospital after two air ambulances land at M5 …
Two air ambulances were sent to a medical emergency on the M5 last night (September 21). Emergency services[1] were called to the motorway to reports of an incident involving a person needing medical help shortly before 8.30pm.
A full road closure was in place on the southbound carriageway between junction 26 for Wellington and junction 27 for Tiverton. All traffic was also held on the northbound side to allow for the air ambulances to land.
It has since been confirmed that the patient was rushed to Southmead[2] Hospital in Bristol by one of the air ambulances. Motorists were diverted off the motorway while the incident was dealt with.
A spokesperson for the South Western Ambulance Service NHS[5] Foundation Trust (SWASFT) said: “We were called at 10:25pm on Thursday, September 21, to an incident on the M5 near Wellington. We sent two air ambulances, a double-crewed land ambulance and an operations officer and conveyed one patient by air ambulance to Southmead Hospital.”
An Avon and Somerset Police[6] spokesperson said at around 9.30pm last night (September 21): “The M5 is currently shut southbound between junctions 26 and 27 to allow emergency services provide medical treatment to one person. Traffic heading northbound is also being held, to allow the air ambulance to land.”
