People heading into Gloucester need ‘extra travel time’ to avoid …

People heading into Gloucester[1] are urged to “allow extra travel time” when the city hosts the Tour of Britain[2] and Pride of Gloucestershire on the same day. Stage seven of the country’s most prestigious cycle race will be held here on Saturday September 9.

Meanwhile thousands of people are expected to attend the Pride in Gloucestershire[3] event in Gloucester Park. The colourful event is the culmination of Pride Week in the county.

Both events will see thousands of people flock into the city centre as people line the streets to watch the cycling and party the night away. Meanwhile England are playing their first match against Argentina in the Rugby World Cup[4] and the Gloucester History Festival hosts talks at Gloucester Blackfriars.

On top of this there are rail strikes taking place. A spokesperson for Gloucestershire County Council[6] encouraged people to consider using bus services or “active travel”, but didn’t elaborate on what that was.

They said: “There are a number of events taking place in Gloucester on Saturday September 9 which may impact on movement around the city. Everyone is encouraged to allow extra travel time and to be mindful of the road closures in operation.

“There are also a number of rail strikes in place so those travelling in and around the city are encouraged to use active travel or bus services.”

They added that more information is available at ThinkTravel – Gloucestershire County Council[7] .

Tour of Britain

The 170.9km race will begin in Tewkesbury and finishing on Southgate Street in Gloucester city centre[8] . The race is due to finish in Gloucester at around 3pm and big screens will be showing ITV[9] coverage of the race from the start.

There will be live music in Gloucester Docks[10] with several performers set to entertain the crowds. A BMX stunt team will showcase their skills in the city.

They will be joined by smoothie bikes, which challenge riders to use pedal power to blend their smoothie, and Cycle Scalextric, where pedal power is used to make the cars race.

There will also be a host of community cycling stands at both the start and finish, as well as a number of events and rides that junior cycle clubs have arranged that will be riding through the finish before the race arrives.

11.30am to 8pm – Pride Festival in Gloucester Park[12] with food and drink, Danter’s Fun Fair, community zones and live entertainment
