New Affordable Housing Building for Seniors Opens in Freeport

A new 45-unit affordable apartment building for seniors has opened in Freeport, Long Island. The Allan and Geraldine Rosenberg Residence, designed by the internationally acclaimed firm Studio Libeskind, provides permanently affordable housing for adults aged 55 and older.
The development was developed by the nonprofit organization Selfhelp and aims to address the rising rent and home prices in Nassau County, making it difficult for seniors to find affordable housing options. The building offers one-bedroom apartments starting at $1,200 per month, with most units renting for $1,432 per month.
Erica Diaz, one of the residents of the new building, expressed her gratitude for finally having a safe and stable place to call home. Diaz, who had experienced homelessness before, was previously sleeping on couches or in her car. She now enjoys the comforts of a bed, pots and pans, and a towel in her own apartment.
The construction of this new building aligns with Governor Kathy Hochul’s call for more housing options to address the shortage of affordable units in the state. The governor recently released $650 million in funding for pro-housing communities.
The building itself stands out among the surrounding red-brick apartments, with its unique design and attention to detail. Studio Libeskind crafted a non-traditional exterior with varying window shapes and sizes to maximize natural light in each unit. Residents appreciate the design, as it doesn’t feel like an institutionalized setting but rather a place they would choose to live, even if they were not subsidized.
The community space and social services available on-site enhance the overall living experience for the residents. The development aims to create a community where seniors can find companionship, enjoy life, and live with dignity.
Affordable housing, especially for seniors, is in high demand in Freeport, and officials hope that this new building will help retain residents and keep them happy in the village.
