More disruption ahead as next stage of Yeovil refurb to start

More disruption is in store for Yeovil town centre as the next stage of an ongoing refurbishment scheme will begin soon.[1]

Large parts of the town centre are currently under construction as the Yeovil Refresh project continues. Shoppers are forced to navigate a maze of fencing at The Borough, Middle Street and The Triangle (known locally as the bandstand).

Now it has been revealed that the next stage of the project will begin later this month. Work around Newton Road, Wyndham Street and the bottom of Middle Street is set to commence at the end of September.[2]

Key elements of this latest stage of work include updating the pedestrian crossing points and introducing wider pavements, on-street parking bays and raised beds for planting. The work will include “active traffic management systems” and temporary traffic lights.

A spokesman for Somerset Council said: “The next phase of works to improve Yeovil Town Centre will commence in the Wyndham Street area, as part of the Yeovil Refresh project. Roads will remain open with work areas coned off and active traffic management systems in place, from September 15. This includes streets linked to the area of works.[4]

“Ahead of this, preparatory work in these streets will take place over the coming weeks. Traffic management will be in place until late January 2024, with temporary traffic lights coming into use at the end of the works only, to enable resurfacing of the streets.

“These works aim to improve the highway and pavements in the area which includes the end of Middle Street, combined with sections of Sherborne Road, Wyndham Street and Newton Road. We are currently visiting and speaking with businesses in the works area and will keep regular contact with them during the works. We will be ensuring that these businesses remain accessible throughout and that disruption is minimised.”
