Met Office confirms when rain will return to Somerset

The Met Office has poured cold water on hopes the current heatwave will run into next week with its latest weather forecast for Somerset.[1]

Temperatures are expected to peak at around 30C in parts of the county tomorrow (Thursday, September 7), but most of Somerset’s main towns will see rain return from Monday.[2]

How much rain will eventually fall remains to be seen with just showers currently forecast on Monday, but the Devon-based meteorologists have not ruled out thunderstorms over the weekend in parts of the South West.

Long-range forecasts from the Met Office show that from September 10 a cold front will develop in the North West which will push towards the South East, but temperatures will remain over 20C in the South West at the start of that period.

UK long range forecast

September 10-19

The very warm spell from the previous few days is likely to break down early in this period, with the passage of a cold front introducing heavy rain at first in the northwest before slowly edging southeast. There is a risk of thunderstorms ahead of this front, in areas where some of the warm and humid air lingers. Temperatures behind the front are likely to return to near-normal values, but some eastern and south-eastern regions may retain the warm and predominantly dry conditions. The end of the period is likely to signal some more changeable weather across the country, though south-eastern areas will likely continue to see the best of any prolonged warm dry spells.

September 20-October 4

There are indications that late September may see a higher probability of high pressure than is typical for the time of year. This would allow for generally drier conditions than average to end the month, but spells of rain and showers are still possible. It is likely that temperatures will generally be above average for the time of year, with a higher likelihood of some unseasonably warm spells than would normally be expected.
