People heading north on the M5 are being warned to expect 'severe delays' due to lane closures after a serious crash this afternoon (September 22)

Traffic monitoring organisation, Inrix, confirmed the northbound carriageway was closed for around an hour before two lanes were reopened.

Inrix has confirmed a collision has taken place between junction 7-8, near Worcester. The traffic monitor states: "M5 Northbound closed, long delays due to accident, two vehicles involved between J8 M50 and J7 A44 (Worcester / Evesham). Congestion to the opposite side due to onlookers.

"Just prior to 12:40 all traffic was held to assist and was confirmed fully closed just over 10 minutes later. Originally lanes one and two (of three) were closed."

The M5 near the Somerset-Devon border reopened this morning after serious police incident last night (Thursday, September 21). There was a huge emergency services response to the incident between junctions 26 and 27 and involved a person requiring medical treatment ^[2].

According to road monitoring website Inrix, all traffic was being held "temporarily". The incident happened on the southbound carriageway, but also led to the opposite side to be closed as well while the air ambulance landed.

An update from National Highways says the motorway is reopen again. A diversion route was set up earlier to help get motorists around the scene. A police spokesman said last night: "The M5 is currently shut southbound between junctions 26 and 27 to allow emergency services provide medical treatment to one person. Traffic heading northbound is also being held, to allow the air ambulance to land."
