Land with quirky feature ‘behind tree screen’ on sale – and it’s cheap
Blink and you’ll miss it, but this slice of land with a historic pumping station on it is on the market[1] in Birmingham – and it’s cheaper than you may think. The way it sits “behind a tree screen”, the land almost looks like its very own island, is situated close to the M6,[2] and has easy access to Birmingham as well as the rest of the Midlands.
Pumping stations are a throwback to the days when Birmingham[3] had issues with its water supplies – although this one is no longer in operation. Pumping stations still exist to this day, often used to safely carry sewage or wastewater to a sewage system when the gravity flow isn’t sufficient.
The land is on a busy housing estate in Handsworth,[4] sandwiched in-between two houses. But it could hold promise for its new owner, agents BidX1 London have said it will “suit various uses.”
Where is the land?
Selling agents BidX1 said on their property advert, on Rightmove: “The property fronts Hamstead Road at its junction with Middlemist Grove with houses on both sides, adjacent to No.368 and comprises a detached single storey brick structure beneath a flat roof.

“The building is set back from the road behind a tree screen, and there is a sub station compound to the rear which is not a part of the property being sold. We understand that utility services including water, foul sewerage, gas and telecoms are located in the public highway and electricity is in close proximity to the site.
“Interested parties should refer to the legal pack and make their own enquiries to satisfy themselves on the availability of any services.”
Which services are nearby?
The land is going up for auction next month, with a guide price of £15,000. On its location, the advert boasts: “The property is situated in Handsworth to the north west of Birmingham, close to the A34 and with easy access onto the M6 as it runs to the east and to the north.

“The property lies in a residential area fronting the B4167 Hamstead Road close to its junction with the B4124 Old Walsall[6] Road where there is a good range of neighbourhood shops and Hamstead Rail station.”
So if you’re interested in buying your own piece of land with a slice of Brummie history, this is certainly something a different. Agents have said the land goes under the hammer on September 21.
