Interesting article on the railway at Scarborough Road (Norton …

The accident referred to as taking place “sometime before 1853” must have occurred during the construction of the line as Sessay Wood Jn (later known as Pilmoor Jn) – Malton via a reversal at Scarborough Road Jn didn’t officially open until 19 May 1853.

My records show that the Bacon Factory siding was last serviced on the 18 September 1964.

It did not stable the empty stock trains associated with the specials arriving and departing Malton station for the Royal Wedding on 8 June 1961.

Instead, the Down and Up Main lines between Malton East Jn and Scarborough Road Jn were used for this purpose.

As bad luck would have it that day the engine working the “pick-up” freight from Malton to Kirbymoorside (railway spelling) became derailed in Helmsley Goods Yard. The Scarborough tool vans attended, rerailed the engine which got back to Malton before the lines were blocked.

Not so lucky were the tool vans who were stranded at Amotherby for several hours before the lines were clear.

The original Scarborough Road signal box, and its associated level crossing, closed on Christmas Eve 1873, being replaced by the new signal box above the road bridge the same day.

At the time of its closure at 14:19hrs on Friday 16 October 1964 when the final Amotherby to Malton freight cleared Malton East, the signal box contained a 32-lever frame, of which only 14 were used.
