Inflatable monsters to be scattered around city during half-term

Eight inflatable monsters are heading to the city centre[1] this October half-term as part of the City of Lincoln Council[2]‘s new events programme. After the council decided to cancel Lincoln Christmas Market[3], a new programme was created called Events in Lincoln, which aims to put on free events across the city all year round.

The first event called Lincoln Live took place across the weekend of Saturday, September 2, and showcased both Lincolnshire and the wider area’s best under-the-radar musicians. The next event on the calendar, Lincoln Monster Invasion, will see gigantic inflatable monsters invade Lincoln’s rooftops from Castle Square, all the way down to the University of Lincoln.

These monsters will illuminate at night to give visitors an opportunity to follow their glow for an evening tour around the city. Taking place from October 23-29, the event will also include Ghostbusters who will be out and about protecting the city streets in search for the monsters on the Saturday, as well as a ‘Monster Mash’ flash mob located in the Cornhill area on the Sunday.

In December, the Lincoln Ice Trail will be launched with a minimum of 10 Christmas themed ice sculptures and a further five bespoke Lincoln-inspired ice figures dotted across Lincoln High Street and Uphill Lincoln, including close to the new Cornhill Market. This will also include live ice carving demonstrations.

The council says that the 2023 programme of free events will give a flavour of what to expect ahead of the official launch of the 2024 Events in Lincoln programme. Speaking on October’s Lincoln Monster Invasion, Cllr Naomi Tweddle, portfolio holder for inclusive economic growth at City of Lincoln Council, said: “Following our fantastic flagship event, Lincoln Live, we are delighted to announce further details for the Lincoln Monster Invasion taking place during October half term.

People will be able to follow the monsters for a tour of the city

“Through significant consultation with residents, visitors and businesses, free activity during holidays for families and adults alike was requested and the monsters have proven incredibly popular in other cities nearby. During the day, the monsters are already impressive, spanning up to 7 metres high across rooftops, but they really come to life and give a new perspective of the city at night.

“Alongside enhancements through live entertainment during the weekend and Frequency Festival returning from 26-29 October, Lincoln Monster Invasion is set to be a fantastic event for all.”

Simon Beardsley, Managing Director at Lincoln BIG added: “Lincoln BIG are delighted to support this event, bringing new life to the city centre during Halloween. We believe these giant inflatable monsters will be a brilliant addition to the city during half term, offering some light-hearted fun in Lincoln driving footfall to the area and supporting local businesses.

“With monsters around every corner in the City Centre, located on various landmarks and iconic buildings, the Lincoln BIG team look forward to this new trail and hope everyone gets the chance to experience some seasonal fun with this spooky makeover!”
