Edinburgh residents allowed to return home and city streets re-open …

Approximately 45 flats had to be evacuated[1] at the junction of West Port in Edinburgh's city centre last night following an incident that gas escaping on Saturday September 23.

Edinburgh Live had broken the news that police had erected a cordon to block access to several roads in the area including West Port and Lady Lawson Street after a gas leak was detected at around 6pm on Saturday.

The Scottish Fire and Rescue Service were also in attendance to help deal with the emergency incident whilst the Southern Gas Networks (SGN) had engineers on site working to resolve the issue after a "smell of gas" was reported in the area.

Road blocks had remained in place until the morning of Sunday September 24 at around 9pm and residents who had been evacuated were also allowed to return to their homes around this time.

A Police Scotland spokesperson released a statement on X, formerly known as Twitter, saying: "Road closures in Edinburgh City Centre in response to a gas leak have been removed.
