Edinburgh police shut off city centre road after “smell of gas …

Emergency services[1] have shut off a city centre street as they attend to an ongoing incident outside of a busy Sainsbury’s store.

Images shared with Edinburgh Live show Police Scotland[2] vehicles blocking off the road at the junction of West Port and Lady Lawson Street at around 6.40pm on Saturday September 23.

Three Scottish Fire and Rescue Service (SFRS) vehicles were also seen in attendance with shocked passers-by capturing the ongoing scene.

One eye witness said: “I was just walking past the area and immediately saw various police cars and a fire engine too.

“Other locals were watching on as well, people all seemed confused as to what was going on.

“I’m not sure what building it was they were responding to but it definitely seemed like it could be something serious.”

A Southern Gas Networks (SGN) van was spotted on the road with a worker in high vis and a hard hat standing adjacent to police officers and firefighters on the street.

SGN have confirmed that they are attending the scene after a "smell of gas" was reported in the area.

The SFRS confirmed that they had three vehicles in attendance at the address.

Police Scotland were approached for comment.
