Cheapest and most expensive places to buy petrol in Gloucestershire
Drivers have been warned of a ‘hard time’ ahead as fuel prices hit highs not seen since last year. The RAC has warned motorists that a surge in global oil prices is likely to raise petrol and diesel costs even higher over the coming weeks, with a ‘significant supply shortfall’ possible following a production cut by Saudi Arabia and Russia.
Brent Crude hit $95 per barrel last week, its highest price in 10 months. Since August 1, people with cars have already been paying more to run them, with fuel costing up to 13p more per litre.
“Drivers are in for a hard time at the pumps,” said RAC fuel spokesperson Simon Williams. “Diesel is set to jump in price from its current average of 159p a litre to over 170p. But the situation with petrol is different with RAC Fuel Watch[1] data showing that prices on the forecourt are actually too high due to retailers taking bigger margins than normal. If they were playing fair with drivers, they would be reducing their prices rather than putting them up.”

The RAC says drivers are paying around 10p more per litre to run a petrol vehicle, while diesel owners are paying 13p more per litre. UK motorists are currently paying on average 155.5p per litre of petrol, while diesel is averaging 159.05p.
Fuel costs hit their peak in June last year, with crude oil costing $120 a barrel following Russia’s invasion of Ukraine early in the year. It decreased to around $70 per barrel this spring, the BBC[4] reports, but has been on the up and up since.
