CAR WEDGED BETWEEN WALL AND TRUCK CLOSES FAIRLEE …

A road traffic collision that has seen a car come to rest wedged between a garden wall and a recovery truck has forced the closure of Fairlee Road on the outskirts of Newport this morning (Wednesday).

The incident has occurred near to Binfield Corner with Police, fire and ambulance crews all in attendance.

It appears the vehicle – a red Mercedes-Benz estate – is off the ground as a result of becoming stuck between a garden wall and a parked recovery truck.

Island Echo understands that Mercedes was driving along Fairlee Road towards Newport when it veered off the road, smashing into the front garden wall of a residential address and making contact with the recovery truck.

The crash was reported at just before 09:10.

Motorists are being diverted away from the area with all traffic in and out of Newport now having to travel via Staplers Road.

UPDATE @ 09:47 – The occupants of the crashed vehicle – thought to be a man and a woman – have been assisted from the car by firefighters, supported by a critical care doctor and paramedics.

They are both being taken to St Mary’s Hospital for further assessment.

The extent of the damage is now clear with a garden wall destroyed.

Fairlee Road has reopened in both directions under give and take. A temporary blockage is expected when the vehicle is recovered.
