Southern Rail tweeted last night: “The emergency services are currently dealing with an incident in the Brighton area.
“Services to and from the station may be delayed or subject to short notice alterations.
“The power to the lines has been switched off between Brighton and Falmer in the interest of safety.”
Some services to Lewes diverted via Wivelsfield from Brighton.
A Southern Rail spokesman said: “The emergency services were responding to a person needing their assistance near the track in the Brighton area.
“Until they were able to do that, the power had to be switched off in the interest of safety, which meant there were delays and cancellations, especially on the route via London Road (Brighton) Station, until the power was restored around 11pm
“We apologise for anyone caught up in the disruption last night, and would encourage them to apply for delay repay if they were delayed by 15 minutes or more.”
