Work to replace bridge on Shields Road in Glasgow to start on 28th …
A £12.6m project will get underway next week, starting on Monday the 28th of August and will see the bridge which carries Shields Road on the south side of Glasgow, over the railway, demolished and rebuilt by summer 2024.[1]
Once complete, the new bridge will be stronger and wider and more able to cope with the capacity of traffic that travels over it each day and will also see long-term weight restrictions removed from the bridge.
Prior to the demolition of the bridge deck and repair work to the bridge abutments taking place, preparatory work will get underway which will see a range of essential utilities which cross the bridge, including water, electricity, gas and broadband used by the local community, diverted.

During this time, pedestrian access and access for cyclists who dismount will be available via a temporary bridge which will be put in place during the early stages of the project.
Whilst the demolition and rebuild stages of the project are underway during spring and summer 2024, three weekend railway line closures will be in place with detail on how this will impact customers set to be released nearer the time.
Laura Craig, scheme project manager at Network Rail[4], said:
“We're very grateful to those living near and those who use Shields Road for their feedback so far on the impact of this road closure.”
“There is never an ideal time to close such a significant part of the road network and we also understand the impact that this will have on those living on the proposed diversion route.”
“We'll deliver this project, along with our contractors and with Glasgow[5] City Council, with the minimum possible inconvenience, for nearby residents and those who use Shields Road.”
“Traffic diversions will be in place from 28 August and we will work closely with the council to observe and monitor use of the diversionary routes to ensure there is no adverse impact on the community.”
