TfL DLR: Docklands Light Railway 10-day part closure ahead

No DLR trains will run between Canning Town and Stratford International for 10 days in August

Docklands Light Railway (DLR) services in east London will be disrupted for 10 days this month for track replacement work.

No trains will run between Canning Town and Stratford International from Saturday August 19, through to bank holiday Monday (August 28).

Transport for London (TfL) says the closure is needed so it can replace key parts of the tracks, which have been in use since the line opened back in 2011.

The stops which will be affected and closed include Star Lane, West Ham, Abbey Road, Stratford High Street, Stratford and Stratford International. The main track works will be taking place between Star Lane and West Ham.

While TfL passengers will be able to use the Jubilee line - which runs parallel, and stops at Canning Town, West Ham and Stratford - people looking to get to Star Lane, Abbey Road or Stratford High Street will have to get buses to their destinations.

Tom Page, TfL’s general manager for the DLR, said: “This closure between Stratford International and Canning Town is to allow vital track maintenance works to take place so that we can continue to offer customers a safe and reliable service across the DLR network. I would like to thank customers for their patience while these routine works take place and would ask anyone travelling to plan ahead, allowing plenty of time for any journey.”

From next year TfL will be rolling out a fleet of brand new turquoise DLR trains to replace the old rolling stock and to boost capacity on the network.

A total of 54 new trains will enter service between 2024 and 2026. They will feature a walk-through design, audio and visual real-time travel information, air conditioning and mobile device charge points.

Two of the new trains have been delivered and are already going through testing ahead of introduction from 2024.

Mr Page said: “These new DLR trains will transform the journeys of millions of existing customers but will also give us the opportunity to welcome many more as new jobs and homes are created in east London and the Docklands area.

“Testing is progressing well ahead of the trains being introduced from 2024 and I really look forward to welcoming this new fleet to help contribute to the DLR’s continuing success.”
