Tewkesbury school attack: Trial date set for teenager accused of …
A trial date has been set for a teenager who is accused of stabbing his teacher at a school in Tewkesbury. The 15-year-old, who cannot be named for legal reasons, is alleged to have stabbed Tewkesbury School teacher Jamie Sansom on July 10 in an incident which left the academy and two other schools in lockdown[1].
The defendant will face trial at Bristol Youth Court on September 4. He has previously admitted a charge of possessing a bladed article but denies the more serious charge of section 18 wounding with intent to cause grievous bodily harm.[2][3]
Gloucestershire Police were called to Tewkesbury School on July 10 at around 9.10am following reports a teacher had been stabbed by a pupil. The school was put into lockdown, along with two other nearby schools, and students and staff reportedly hid in storage cupboards[4] while officers searched the site.
Jamie Sansom[6], who taught maths at the school was discharged from hospital on the same day he was allegedly stabbed and said he was “recovering well.”
James McKenna, defending, did not apply for bail and the youth was remanded into secure accommodation to await trial. At Gloucestershire Magistrates’ Court, District Judge Nicholas Wattam told the defendant: “The next day you will be in court there will be a trial and that will be September 4 in Bristol.
“In the meantime, you will be remanded into custody for the same grounds and reasons as before.”
