Sussex to be hit with ‘unseasonably windy weather’ as 14 hour …
Parts of Sussex are set to experience “unreasonably windy weather” on Wednesday (August 2) as wind gusts could reach up to 50mph along the coast. The Met Office has issued a yellow weather warning for parts of Sussex that will be in place from 4am until 6pm, including across Chichester[1], Worthing[2], Brighton[3] and Eastbourne[4].
Although not likely to impact the whole county, these adverse windy conditions will impact a number of Sussex areas across the coastline, as well as some inland areas near to the coast, including Arundel[5], Steyning and Uckfield[6]. Sussex residents have been warned to expect traffic and travel disruption including to road, rail, air and ferry travel.
A Met Office spokesperson said: “Unseasonably windy conditions, accompanied by showers or longer spells of rain, will affect southern England and Wales during Wednesday. The highest winds will affect the Isles of Scilly and Cornwall from early morning, spreading into other English Channel coastal areas during the morning with gusts expected to widely reach 45-50 mph and perhaps in excess of 55-60 mph in the most exposed spots in the far south and southwest of England. Later in the afternoon winds will start to slowly ease.”
With strong wind gusts[8], bus and train services are likely to be impacted and a loss of power could be possible in some areas. People should also expect large waves by the coast and should avoid seafront areas where possible.
In advice by the Met Office, people driving have been advised to slow down, keep a firm hold on the steering wheel and “be cautious” when overtaking high sided vehicles/caravans. In high winds, people are also advised to stay indoors as much as possible to avoid injury and make sure loose objects outside of the home are secured.
At the moment, the weather warning will be in place until 6pm on Wednesday. Areas across Sussex further inland including Haywards Heath, Crawley and East Grinstead are unlikely to be impacted by the weather warning.
