Surrey train strikes announced ahead of kids returning to school

Strikes have been announced once again on the South Western Railway, as RMT announce further industrial action for the last weekend of August, and first weekend of September. Surrey has seen reduced services recently, with some stations being crossed off the roster, and others seeing one train stopping per hour.

The strikes were announced on Friday, August 11 by RMT, which stated that the days chosen[1] are Saturday, August 26 and Saturday, September 2. As well as South Western Railway, other operators are Gatwick Express, Southern, Thameslink, and Southeastern.

Exact details of the strikes are yet to be announced by South Western Railway, it has been advised that trains will operate at a “significantly reduced service”. Trains could run between 7am and 7pm on the nominated days for industrial action.

In recent strikes, such as those announced in July, only certain routes remained open for customers, but as little as one train per hour was scheduled from some stations. Here is a recap[3] of the July strikes, and what could be expected for the upcoming industrial action…

Rail frequencies were significantly reduced, with between one and four trains running per hour between Waterloo, Hounslow, Basingstoke and Southampton, all cutting through Surrey. From London Waterloo to Woking[4] there were four trains per hour and from Guildford[5] to Woking, just one train per hour on nominated strike days.
