Stagecoach bus bursts into flames in Liverpool City Centre

A number of roads were closed in Liverpool City Centre after a Stagecoach bus burst into flames.

Dramatic pictures and videos were shared on social media just after 6pm on Friday, August 25, of smoke billowing out from the bus opposite Lime Street Station.

A number of road closures were put in place in the city centre and Merseyside Police urged people to avoid the area.

A Merseyside Police spokesperson said: "ROAD CLOSURES | Due to an ongoing incident the junctions of Great Charlotte St / Hanover St & Gradwell St / Hanover Street, are currently closed.

"Emergency Services are in attendance. Please avoid the area & find alternative routes for your journey. Updates to follow."

Pictures and videos shared with the Liverpool ECHO showed firefighters from Merseyside Fire & Rescue Service battling the blaze before the fire was put out. A cordon is now in place around the bus.

Arriva North West tweeted: "Due to a vehicle fire on Elliott St, Services 7 and 79 will terminate and restart at Brownlow Hill. Services 75 86 and 86A will use Berry St and Duke St to Liverpool One in both Directions, 82 will use Park Lane in both directions"
