Shirt worn by man found in River Mersey may answer vital question

Police have released key details of a man who was found dead in the River Mersey.

Merseyside Police were called to New Brighton beach at around 9.30am on Sunday, August 6, following reports of a body being found by a dog walker. Once officers arrived at the scene they found the body of a man in the water.

Police have been working over the last week to try and identify the man and trace his next of kin. Now, they have released new details about the man including his believed age, height and scars on his body, in an attempt to identify him.

An image of the shirt he was wearing has also been released

A spokesperson from Merseyside Police said: "The man is described as a white male, who was around 50 years of age, 5ft 10in tall with a beard and had short dark hair. The man also had a large scar and surgical implant on his left shoulder, as well as another scar on his upper abdomen.

"When found he was wearing a large sized shirt. He also had a 32 sized waist and wore footwear in a size eight."

Police have also released an image of the man's distinctive Champion shirt, which they hope could help identify him. The death is currently being treated as unexplained and a post-mortem examination will take place to establish the cause of death.
