Severn Bridge half marathon traffic warning issued as runners …

Drivers have been urged to plan ahead before a big running event closes one of the Severn Crossings later this week. The Severn Bridge Half Marathon and 10k returns on Sunday (August 27) as thousands of runners tackle the two courses.

As part of the event, the M48 Severn Bridge will be closed between 7.30am and 12.30pm. National Highways said that, as a result, drivers should make sure they allow extra time for their journeys, with “clearly signed” diversions being set up.

Runners completing the 10k go over the M48 bridge from Wales to England before crossing junction one of the motorway and turning back, eventually finishing at the Newhouse Industrial Estate in Chepstow. For those doing the half marathon, runners complete two circuits of the 10k course before tackling an additional section to make up the required distance.

Kathryn Wiltshire, South West Network Planner for National Highways, said: “We’d like to remind road users to plan ahead, and as well as the bridge closure, local roads are also expected to be a little busier before and after the races. Our advice is to check our traffic and travel information channels, set off early and allow a little extra time for your journey.”

National Highways added: “Drivers can get up-to-the-minute travel information on the @HighwaysSWEST Twitter[2] feed, by accessing the website www.trafficengland.com[3] or by phoning the National Highways Information Line on 0300 123 5000.”
