A Lymington road could be shut for up to a week for repairs after a crash this morning (Tuesday) caused a large diesel spill.

Police closed Sway Road at both ends after the collision between a lorry and a van just before 9am, and diverted traffic from the scene.

No one was injured, and an officer at the scene told the A&T the road could be closed for days while resurfacing work is carried out to repair the road.

Sway Road resident Jill Honeybun told the A&T the collision has been “an accident waiting to happen” on a road that is “very overused”.

“It was chaos out there this morning,” she said. “I was sitting at home in my dining room when I heard a siren outside.

“I saw it was a fire engine going past and then traffic started backing up down the road.

“I thought it might have been an incident involving one of my neighbour’s horses at first, but then I heard from a police officer it was a collision.

“I went outside my home and started helping divert traffic away from the scene for a while because cars were still coming down the road, and then having to turn around and drive back out.”

Jill added: “This road is a real pitfall for the unwary. There’re no signs to warn drivers about pinch points and the hedges have not been trimmed back in years.

“I’ve read that this is one of the busiest C roads in Hampshire but there are heavy trucks using this road regularly that are banned from going down Lyndhurst High Street.

“With the new developments planned for Hordle, and other works for Gordleton Industrial Estate in the pipeline, the traffic and HGVs out there will only get worse.

“These roads can’t cope with the volume of traffic as it is.”

The A&T has approached Hampshire County Council for comment.
