Person dies after being hit by train at Merseyrail station

A person has died after being hit by a train.

Merseyrail first started reporting disruption between Moorfields and Formby[1] just before 4pm on Tuesday, August 22 following an “incident on the line”. National Rail later confirmed a person was hit by a train between Hall Road and Southport.

Emergency services were called to the scene, including an air ambulance. British Transport Police have now confirmed the person died at the scene, despite the best efforts of paramedics and police.

A spokesperson from BTP said: “Officers were called to the line near Formby at 3.50pm today (22 August) following reports of a casualty on the line. Paramedics also attended however sadly a person was pronounced dead at the scene.

“The incident is not being treated as suspicious and a file will be prepared for the coroner.”

The Southport to Hunts Cross line is closed in order for first responders to carry out work safely.

A number of services have been cancelled and a rail replacement bus service has been requested. Delays are expected until around 6pm.

An update from Merseyrail said: “Due to an incident on the line near Freshfeild station, services on the Southport and Hunts Cross line will face delays and alterations to service. Some services will start and terminate at Hall Road.”

A spokesperson from National Rail said: “A person has been hit by a train between Hall Road and Southport. To allow the emergency services to safely carry out their work, all lines are closed.

“As a result, trains are currently unable to run between Hall Road and Southport. This is expected until 6pm.”

Merseyrail tickets are being accepted on Arriva bus services 47, 53 and 300.

  • 17.21 Hunts Cross to Southport has been cancelled
  • 15.21 Hunts Cross to Southport will terminate at Hall Road
  • 15.36 Hunts Cross to Southport will terminate at Hall Road
  • 15.51 Hunts Cross to Southport will terminate at Hall Road
  • 16.06 Hunts Cross to Southport will terminate at Hall Road
  • 16.27 Southport to Hunts Cross will start at Hall Road
  • 16.51 Hunts Cross to Southport has terminated at Sandhills
  • 17.06 Hunts Cross to Southport will terminate at Hall Road
  • 16.42 Southport to Hunts Cross will start from Hall Road
  • 17.12 Southport to Hunts Cross will start at Sandhills
  • 17.36 Hunts Cross to Southport will terminate at Hall Road

  • 17.51 Hunts Cross to Southport will terminate at Hall Road.
